MISSION-- It's an achievement for a coffee shop in the Rio Grande Valley to be serving up lattes, for 10 years in the face of corporate coffee and a counter culture against local coffee shops. However, the owners of Jitterz Coffee Bar know all too well the struggles of the business, but instead of attaining a liquor license to try and draw more customers through their doors, Jitterz honed in on a family-friendly atmosphere that draws in pretty much anyone. To celebrate this achievement, Jitterz will be hosting a 10-year celebration on May 10 from 6 p.m. To 10 p.m.The event is free to the public and will feature a performance by Sick Sea, a local indie band that has been making its mark both at home and across the country. The celebration will also be home to an art competition, a coffee tasting competition and many free door prizes.Jitterz manager Audrey Scott said this celebration is a way to give back and thank the community for their support of local coffee.Scott explained that the entire month of May will be a celebration, as Jitterz will be having a different promotion each week, like discounted coffees. One promotion in particular is aimed at giving back to the community.Scott said that during one week in May, customers may bring in five cans of non-perishable foods and receive up to 50 percent off their entire order.Scott said Jitterz is succeeding in its mission to be a home for teens for them to be able to have somewhere safe to hang out.And although Jitterz does appease the hipsters, music lovers and young at heart, it also feels like a great place to do some actual studying, host a meeting and it's even a great place to just show up, chat up the barista of the day and browse through the art displayed all over the walls.
