South Texas College’s History Department is working to raise funds to expand its celebration of Black History Month in February 2010. The department will host a fundraiser at 7 p.m. on Aug. 20 at The Elephant Room in downtown McAllen, located at 1106 Austin.
“This year we launched our first, large-scale celebration of African American history, bringing in a variety of diverse speakers who taught our students about history in terms of music, dress and faith, and who touched on the important role African Americans have played in the development of the Rio Grande Valley,” said Mychal Odom, STC history instructor. “Next year we plan to expand the month’s celebrations to include activities and speakers at all five of the college’s campuses and to possibly include additional hands-on workshops and seminars.”
Donations will be collected during the event that will include live music, a DJ and appetizers.
