Congratulations to David Perez, junior at Sharyland High School, for winning the McCANALenBurg Challenge 2009 Art Contest.
His logo design captured the spirit of the event and was used for the third annual McCANALenBurg Challenge; an off-road bike race and community ride between McAllen and Edinburg along the scenic and historic Edinburg Main Canal. Eric Ellman, Executive Director, from Los Caminos del Rio and Cynthia Galindo-Julian, graduate of the Art Institute of Houston and former Creative Art Director of Studio 901, presented David with a $100 scholarship. David had the chance to work with a professional design team to make his design camera ready. Also, T-shirts were designed with the logo and given away during the event.
David also developed a conceptual design for future bicycle underpasses and overpasses hand-in-hand with the City of McAllen’s Drainage Engineer, Mario Cruz.
“I have been inspired and influenced greatly by friends and teachers,” said David. “The McCANALenBurg challenge was a priceless experience for me since I was able to work with a professional team to make my design picture perfect. I was also able to meet and interact with state representatives in regards to the bicycle trails. I was inspired to do such work by my art teacher, Mrs. Garcia.”
