Wedding best wishes go out to Kendra Worbington & Taylor Allen, long-time sweethearts who married last Saturday in McAllen. Parents of the newlyweds are Lana & Kenny Worbington and Ann & Mark Allen, while Evelyn Worbington and Janet Wallace are the proud grandmoms!

Saw Phyllis Hutchins, who is just back from an Egyptian sojourn and a celebration of her birthday (Jan. 6th) on the Nile. Many of us might spend a birthday in denial, but not actually on the Nile . . .

Sharyland native Kayla Dreyer celebrated her birthday a week ago with dinner at Republic of the Rio Grande and drinks at the Boiler Room. As a UT Law alum, of course her party wouldn’t have been complete without a smattering of young attorneys… partygoers included new Valley residents and lawyers Iain Kennedy, Chiqui Sanchez-Ross, Brian Potter, Sarah Donaldson, Kristin Small, and Paul DiBlasi.

Local natives were represented as well: paralegal Nathan Schwarz, lawyer Stephanie Potter, graphic artists Pablo de la Rosa and Kyle Knipp, Manic Haus owner Dawn Haughey, writer/teacher Chris Anzaldua, and music producer Charlie Vela. Also sharing the spotlight with Kayla was birthday boy Stefan Fraering, a Valley native who is now a DJ and electrical engineer in Austin.

Speaking of lawyers, the Hidalgo County Young Lawyers Association hosted a happy hour last Thursday at Shotz in Mission. Current HCYLA President Linley Boone and her fiance Pablo Almaguer were there, of course-spreading the big news of their recent engagement! Other attendees included Jesse Barba, HCYLA secretary Elizabeth Alvarado Garcia, and Laura Colunga (who was celebrating her birthday as well).

Saw cute McAllen couple Arantza Garcia & Tommy Vela at Patio on Guerra. Patio sure seems like a great place to be seen, for people of any age … every time I stop by, I run into friends young and old.

Among the folks who recently sampled beers at Roosevelt’s at 7 were Amy Booth, Lara MacGonigle, Daniella Mugica and Christina Calvillo. My daughter Stephanie also loves to try the interesting brews at this Main Street ale house (though she promises me that there’s a good selection of wine, too). While Steph and her husband often go to Roosevelt’s for no reason at all, Amy, Lara, Daniella and Christina were there for a special occasion: Amy’s birthday! She turned twenty-something on January 19.

Danny and I enjoyed a delicious dinner last week at the brand new Cheddar’s Casual Cafe on Expressway 83 and Ware Road. General Manager Ruben Holguin shared his excitement about Cheddar’s opening night-which seemed to be going very well-and made sure that we and LD & Gretchen Clopton received great food and service.

While many us relaxed over the long weekend, speedy couple Jen & Luke Wackerle and a big group of talented runners from the Valley celebrated Martin Luther King Day by running the Houston Marathon on January 18. McAllen should be proud of its athletes: as if finishing a 26-mile race isn’t accomplishment enough, this crew finishes FAST!

Happy birthday for yesterday to Sylvia Gayle Klein; for today to Debi Crouch; and for tomorrow to Kay Moffitt . . .
