Presentation of awards honoring exceptional service to the public and the legal profession will be a highlight of the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, to be held June 10-11 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

The following area individuals and organizations are among those being honored:

Justice Linda Yanez of Edinburg, Sarah T. Hughes Award, presented by the Women and the Law Section. This award honors the accomplishments of women who have achieved outstanding recognition in their professional area and who, by doing so, have paved the way for success for other women attorneys.

Rebecca Vela of McAllen, Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) President’s Award of Merit, for serving as co-chair of the State Moot Court Competition and co-chair of the Local Affiliates Committee dedicated to ensuring the State Bar and TYLA had another successful Bar Leaders Conference. The TYLA Roadshows that were held in Brownsville and McAllen would not have been possible without Vela’s guidance and leadership.

She also served as a co-chair of the Family Law-Seniors and Children’s Rights Committee and was instrumental in editing “Loves Me, Loves Me Not: A Handbook on Teen Dating Violence.”

The State Bar of Texas is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Texas that provides educational programs for the legal profession and the public, administers the minimum continuing legal education program for attorneys, and manages the attorney discipline system.
