Wedding best wishes go out to Gail Law & Terry Newlin, who tied the knot last Friday, May 29, 2009. Her mom, whom I’ve known forever, is Gladys Law . . .

Airy best wishes are given to Laura McCreery & Angel Pulido, who were married last Saturday, May 30, 2009, and possibly had some celebrating to do with an airplane hangar. Her parents are Margie & Bob McCreery . . .

At our last meeting in May (to be resumed in September), our Literary Luncheon League had fun with Linda Miller’s entertaining review of Summer at Tiffany, by Marjorie Hart, a tale of two Iowa college girls who spent the summer of ‘45 working at Tiffany’s in New York City. Linda reviewed with her usual elan, causing many a laugh as we heard about the movie stars who came in and shopped!

In a funny coincidence, saw Linda & Jimmy’s daughter, the adorable Leslie Miller, and met Jerry Raders, son of my son’s golf coach John Raders — McAllen is still a small world and we natives are lucky to participate in a community where we know folks . . .

Had an enlightening phone chat with Mark Southwell and his assistant Thelma Vela, and an in-person visit with Compass Bank’s Veronica DeLeon - so here’s a thank you to all of McAllen financial professionals working out there to help the rest of us cope. We will survive this market. Plus, hey, I like gardening, working part-time at home and cooking, don’t you all? To be painfully honest, I like my husband to cook . . .

Saw Eva & Dr. Wayne Wilson enjoying an evening dining out, as were Irma & Carlos Garza a little later. A great meal at Bistro M, some peaceful time together — priceless!

Gay & Andy Hill can agree on that. (Okay, I know I just said that about cooking at home, but we do have to help out the local restaurant business sometimes . . .)

Though Frances Metcalf, Jackie Jones, and Ann Moore claimed to be glad to have me back in the country, I noticed they all took my card change. Oh, the agony of having a bad day at bridge!

McAllen Junior League newsletter is a font of information — I learned that April Chapa and I have Chihuahuas in common, and that Tina Martin has a nice Lab and a mean cat. Some friends might say my Chihuahua is also mean . . .

A special barely belated happy anniversary wish goes to Alma & R. T. Sparks, who celebrated their 65th (!) anniversary last week! Isn’t that wonderful to have a couple who married on May 28, 1944, during the war, and are still happy together?

Thanks go to their son and fellow McHi alum, Trev Sparks, who clued me in on the news . . .

McAllen’s Pan American Round Table had their summer business meeting yesterday, arranged by the well-organized Mary Bertha Martinez . . .

Happy birthday for yesterday, June 2nd, to Margarita Salinas, Debbie Ingram, and Linda Cattaruzza . . .

Birthday cheer for today is wished to Dr. Joao doVale, Joseph Williamson, Gail Ewing, Ray Wilkinson, Sandra Thomas, and Jessica Kaiser . . .

Celebrating their birthdays tomorrow are Virginia Skloss, Elva Cerda, Debbie Morrow, Madeline Scalise, and William Pruitt . . .
