EDINBURG PARA, Pan American Retirees Association, hosts Texas' 2012 Poet Laureate Jan Seale on Nov. 17. She will entertain members with a program titled "Students and Other wildlife: Poems from Teaching and Living in the Valley."

PARA is a newly-formed association of retirees of The University of Texas Pan American. Events for members are planned for each month to provide opportunities for former employees to get together and share in various activities. The November program takes place at 2 PM in the International Room of the ITT building on the west side of the Edinburg campus. Refreshments will be served.

Jan Seale was appointed in May by the Texas legislature as the 2012 Poet Laureate of the state. She is the 49th designate and the first from the Rio Grande Valley.. She and her husband Carl, a retired Pan Am music professor and former conductor of the Valley Symphony Orchestra, are members of PARA.

A Valley resident since the early 1970's, she taught for 12 years on the English faculty at UTPA. She has also taught at West Texas A&M University and North Texas University. One of her duties as poet laureate is to tour Texas, speaking to various audiences about the importance of poetry and literature.
