Last month, John Flores was recognized for his perseverance and exceptional skill in reporting the story of Dolia Gonzalez and her son, the late United States Marine Sergeant Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez, who is a Vietnam War hero. The Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 3rd Called Session commanded Flores for his efforts as reporter and author and for helping Dolia Gonzalez help.
Flores was a freelance writer and a former staff reporter for The Monitor newspaper. It was during that time that he discovered the United States Department of Veterans Affairs had cancelled the benefits of Dolia Gonzalez after her son’s death. The department was also demanding $8,000 in reimbursement from an alleged overpayment of benefits.
Flores was also honored by the Governor of the State of New Mexico for his outstanding service and devotion toward veterans. The City of Albuquerque also proclaimed June 29, 2009 as John W. Flores Day.
