SAN BENITO The San Benito Chamber of Commerce will host the Rio Grande Valley Sportsman's Expo on Aug. 20 in San Benito.

"This collection of outdoor events is designed to attract the hearty sportsmen and women of the South Texas area," according to Zeke Padilla, president of the San Benito Chamber of Commerce. "We are testing the shooting skills, alligator gar fishing techniques and outdoor cooking abilities of some of our toughest citizens. I challenge all he-men and she-women to step up to the plate and see if they have what it takes to be a true South Texas Champion," he said.

The events consist of the Centennial Skeet Shoot-Out/Cook-Off/Alligator Gar Round-Up and Market Day at the San Benito Fairgrounds on FM 510. Pre registration for the event can be made by emailing zpadilla@cityofsanbenito.com or calling Zeke Padilla at 956-399-5321. On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. the day of the event. The first shot will be fired at 8:45 a.m. and no teams will be allowed after 10 a.m.

Shooting competition includes a three-person team, seven stations and 25 targets per person for a registration fee of $325. A $10 mulligan with a maximum of two per person is available.

Shooting for cash games includes $20 for an Annie Oakley, $10 for Texas Country Doubles and $10 for flurries.

Three places will be awarded including a bay fishing trip for three and a one-night Arroyo cabin stay.

Shooters must provide their own gun, ammunition and protection for eyes and ears. The event services are coordinated and provided by Clays Unlimited.

The Centennial Cook-Off features categories of beef brisket, pork spare ribs, pan de campo and half-chickens. Set-up will be the evening before the event starting at 5 p.m. Cooking will not begin until Saturday morning after inspection of meat. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded. Entry fee per category is $25.

The event also marks the return of the Alligator Gar Round-Up with two categories: rod & reel and Bow and arrow. Fishing may be from your favorite fishing spot in area resacas or canals. Shotgun start at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. Weigh station is at San Benito Fairgrounds, FM 510, beginning Saturday at 8 a.m. and concluding at 11:30 a.m. Prizes for each category go to the top three anglers with the to angler receiving an additional $200 and the Alligator-Gar Round-Up bragging rights for one year, according to Padilla. Registration is $25 per person.
