Singer to collaborate on stage with UTRGV Mariachi & Ballet

McALLEN – Multi-Grammy winner Vikki Carr will take the stage at the McAllen Performing Arts Center Friday Dec. 16 at 8 p.m.

This time though Carr will be joined on stage by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Mariachi Atzlan as well as UTRGV Ballet Folklorico. Carr is no stranger to mariachi shows but adding a ballet is something new.

“I've done mariachi shows before but this should be lovely because we have the ballet folklorico,” she said.

Carr knows this show will be a timely performance but she admits her fans want to hear her hits like Ni Princesa, Total and Grande Grande so to appease the audience she will be doing those songs with Mariachi Aztlan as well.

Carr calls San Antonio home so rehearsals with the UTRGV troops have been slim. Carr said she sent the music to the mariachi and ballet directors so the students could learn the songs but just last weekend Mariachi Atzlan and Carr got together for a rehearsal.

Mariachi Atzlan was in San Antonio attending the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza so the two had an opportunity to rehearse at the Lila Cockrell Theatre.

“Mariachi Atzlan are just incredible,” Carr said. “They've won so many competitions and are so professional and I was thrilled to work with them.”

For Carr a collaboration like this is refreshing. Working with younger people who ask questions was something she needed herself.

“Unless I change my show with the band, they all of a sudden, spark to life,” she said. “Sometimes musicians get to play the same thing over and over and it's almost like you're a robot and I would like for them to be in the show, be part of my show and get into the music also.”

The 2017 San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame inductee hopes those attending her show for the first time will enjoy listening her songs.

Those wanting to attend the Vikki Carr & Friends can visit the McAllen Convention Center Box Office and for tickets which start at $40.
