SAN JUAN – Four Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD campuses were recently recognized by the San Juan Commission for winning the Díade Los Muertos Altar Contest last month. Kelly-Pharr Elementary, Garcia Elementary, Alamo Middle School and PSJA Early College High School received the top awards in their categories and were presented an award during the city meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
The altar contest was part of a week-long celebration honoring the tradition and was put together by the City of San Juan, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the Mexican Consulate Nov. 1-4.
A total of 12 PSJA ISD schools participated in the contest by displaying an altar prepared by students and staff honoring various local and pop culture icons. Altars were judged by staff members from the Mexican Consulate and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley-Mexican American Studies Department.
During the meeting, Reed & Mock Elementary also received an Honorable Mention recognition.
