McALLEN - Beginning Jan. 23 United Way of South Texas will launch the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.

Now in its sixth year the program aims to assist families earning less than $54,000 with their income tax return preparations at 14 different locations across Hidalgo and Starr counties.

Last year the VITA program prepared returns for 3,102 households and brought in $6.1 million in returns. This tax season volunteers hope to help more families and increase the total dollar refund.

For questions about the VITA Program contact Eslibeth (956) 607-9030 or Thelma at the United Way of South Texas (956) 686-6331.

“We see the positive impact (VITA) has on the economy and most importantly we're glad to partner and have our own team members volunteer and help families in the Rio Grande Valley,” Wells Fargo district manager Yolanda Gonzalez said.
