Two students from McAllen Memorial High are heading to the state level in Cross-Examination Debate.

Yael Silberman and Balbina Gonzalez will compete at the University Interscholastic League meet March 16-18 at the University of Texas at Austin.

This year’s debate topic prompted students to research and form their own thoughts and opinions on real-world issues. This year’s topic centered on economic and diplomatic relations between the United States and China. They qualified at the UIL District Meet held Feb. 11 at McAllen High.

McAllen ISD offers students UIL competition in multiple events in elementary, middle and high school.

Through participation at the UIL academic state meet, students qualify for Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarships. Since its inception in 1959, the TILF has provided more than $29 million to more than 19,000 students. Grants and donations from foundations and individuals have funded these academic scholarships.
