Our McAllen High Mariachi Oro won big at the 12th Annual FESTIBA (Festival of International Books and Arts) Mariachi Competition held March 4 at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. They won for the fifth straight year while completing a sweep of all the caption awards including Best Trumpets, Best Violins, Best Rhythm Section and Best Vocals.

“This is a huge accomplishment considering it was an event that featured almost 50 mariachi groups and over 700 mariachi students,” Director Alex Trevino said. “In addition to a busy Friday and Saturday at FESTIBA, they also brought back the 1st Place trophy in the 5A and 6A Division of this Sunday’s State Farm Arena Borderfest competition and also earned the big $1,000 prize, which will go into our scholarship fund for our McHi Mariachi seniors.”

They will compete in the UIL State Contest in San Antonio March 10-12 at the Southwest High Performing Arts Center.
