Thursday afternoons at 5:00 p.m. can make or break you. You are usually looking for a local watering hole to either help find the strength to muster up just one more day, or to jump start the “first part” of your weekend. For us, our time at Copper Moon Bar & Grill this past week was a needed, yet temporary escape from our wild, hectic schedules to a small little oasis found in the middle of McAllen, where we could truly enjoy some “chill” time with friends to laugh and participate in the required indulgence of their Happy Hour.

Gaby: This week the roles were reversed and I had Trisha waiting for me for almost 20 minutes. What could I do? Work had me wrapped up until close to 7:00 p.m.

The parking lot was full but luckily I was able to find a spot towards the back which led me to enter the establishment through its outdoor garden. I entered hastily and spotted my comrade across the way. Trisha seemed to be fine as she was with a friend of ours and a drink in one hand.

Trisha: “No worries, doll. It’s been one of THOSE days for all of us. Here, have a bite!”

Gaby: Boy, was I jelly! I sat down, said “hello”, opened up the Signature Libations menu (I really like that name) and immediately ordered a Cilantro Margarita (blanco Tequila, lime, simple, cilantro). I was on a mission to find quickest cure for the roller coaster of a day I had. Luckily, there was a quarter of a fried avocado on the table which I, of course, devoured. No questions asked, no regrets.

Trisha: That last bit of avocado, gobbled up by Gaby, was the remaining morsel of our delectable Fried Moon Avocado (avocado stuffed with spicy chicken, lightly battered and fried, topped with mozzarella and warm salsa) total “green” goodness. I’d also, as Gaby subtly pointed out, been sipping on a glass of Malbec, thoughtfully ordered by our gracious friend who’d been waiting on Gaby with me.

After scanning the drink menu, my interest was peaked by the B83 Spritz, a mouthwatering concoction of Vodka, St. Germain, Lemon, and California Champagne. I placed my order in anticipation of the divine treat I was about to experience.

Gaby: I must confess, the minutes between ordering my drink and finally being able to take the first sip of relaxation were a bit hazy; my mind was still racing at 1,000 mph. The Margarita arrived, we had a moment, and then the world seemed to reappear.

I could finally take a good look around and appreciate my surroundings. Copper Moon’s garden was filled with lush plants, mood lighting and the sublime sounds of our friend Arzalez strumming away on his guitar. I swear, this guy is everywhere. There’s some stalking going on with him; I don’t know who is stalking whom, but there’s definitely some stalking involved. haha!

Trisha: “What a gorgeous night to sit outside and just appreciate life. All we’re missing are a few hammocks.”

Gaby: “Wow, sounding a bit too much like an inspirational Facebook quote/post there!”

Trisha: “Always hatin’! (lol) Breathe in...breathe out. Relax and enjoy the evening, Ms. Jones.”

A drink was on its way and so were the scrumptious Flautas (beef and chorizo blend, Monterrey Jack cheese and flour tortillas served with House creme and salsa) and Luna Stuffed Peppers (Jalapeño peppers stuffed with BBQ roast beef) we’d ordered.

Gaby: While the weather played a very important part in the evening, we know that the Valley doesn’t always cooperate when it comes to heat. However, no fear, Copper Moon does have misters in their garden area to keep you cool and collected for those hot summer nights. “Trisha, get your mind out of the gutter!”

Trisha: “Ha! Stop leading by the hand, Miss “misters to keep you cool on a hot summer night”.

Gaby: Our server came up to our table just as Happy Hour was coming to a finish and asked if we needed anything else. “Will our drinks make it into our system before 8?” Trisha asked. Our server gleefully laughed and assured us they would.

Trisha: Well, then two Hurricane Izzys (Bacardi Limon, Southern Comfort, Watermelon, Bacardi 151, cranberry and pineapple), please!

After gulping down our potent Hurricanes, we called it a night and decided we’d eventually make a return visit to try brunch one weekend.

Gaby: Happy Hour is celebrated at Copper Moon Bar & Grill every Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Specials include $2.00 off their cocktail menu and craft beers, with “well” drinks at $4.00, draft beer at $2.00 and domestic bottles at $2.75 each.
