EDINBURG – Seven routes were swept up by a convoy of street sweepers across Hidalgo County for the third annual Operation Clean Sweep.

The project which aims to clear debris from bike lanes was a joint effort by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Hidalgo Precinct No. 2, McAllen, Edinburg, Alton, Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Mission and La Villa.

The Run Ride and Share campaign initiated Operation Clean Sweep three years ago to increase awareness about road safety. Street sweepers clean road shoulders and bike lanes to encourage cycling in the community.

For groups like the 5AM Wake-Up Ride clean ups like this are essential to their rides. Edinburg Chamber Director of Marketing Ronnie Larralde is a member of the group and for him and his fellow cyclists the street clean ups create safer and more enjoyable rides but he notes everyone benefits from clean streets.

“A lot of our community depends on our roads to get to work and school,” he said. “We don't realize that shoulder impacts our lives daily through quality of life, education and commerce.”
