EDINBURG – With the growth on the north side of town and university studies saying economically, the county will split at Highway 107 so it made sense to bring healthcare to the area.

Leaders with South Texas Health Systems (STHS) broke ground on what will be their third standalone emergency room.

The new $9 million facility will be the most northern emergency room not only in Edinburg but Hidalgo County. The facility will also hold nine treatment spaces, advanced imaging including CT scanning, ultrasound and general radiography, it will be 24/7 services for urgent care and it will be staffed by a physician around the clock.

“Hopefully it will reduce the travel time of having to go into Edinburg,” South Texas Health System Regional Vice President Doug Matney said.

The facility will open in December and will provide 25 high-paying jobs. Matney said with any luck hopefully in 60 days they'll announce a similar facility.

The emergency room is located on the southwest side of Monte Cristo Road and Interstate 69. It will serve about 60,000 people that live in the area.
