Quittin’ time, for the standard nine-to-five laborer, is rarely a second later than 5 p.m. For us, that is rarely the case. Needless to say, whenever the chance to end our work day before sundown presents itself, we relish the moment and attempt to break away from the monotony. SALT-New American Table, Owner/Executive Chef Larry and Jessica Delgado’s second restaurant in McAllen, is a place where our palates go to play and indulge.
Right as the clock struck 5 o’clock, we phoned each other to find out one another’s location.
Trisha: It turns out I was in the parking lot and Gaby was only a block away. Stalker much?
Gaby: I plead the 5th! After the Manic Monday we both had, our brains were in sync and knew exactly where to go.
We eagerly made our way through the door. We were cheerfully greeted and escorted to a table of our choice, then promptly provided with a couple of drink and food menus. After asking if there were any featured appetizer items, we were graciously informed that, technically, there were none. However, we could take advantage of the opportunity to order 1 of the 3 available orders of Sweet Breads that, due to limited amount, were not listed on the menu for the evening.
Gaby: Those Sweet Breads are my weakness and a classic staple at SALT. They are wrapped with Compart Duroc Bacon Wrapped and lay on a bed of Fingerling Potatoes, Wild Mushrooms and a dish drizzled with Habanero Honey.
Trisha: And you know how we love to go big or go home on our appetizers so, of course, we went for it and ordered the SALT Chips (Housemade Potato Chips, Smoked Salt, Gorgonzola Cream and Ramps). Delish!
We had our appetizers with a (cocktail) side of Salty Dog (Tito’s Vodka, St. Germain, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Bubbles, Grapefruit Salt) and a Lavender (Bombay Sapphire Gin, St. Germaine, Lavender Syrup, Orange, Meyer Lemon and Lavender Sugar/Salt).
Trisha: Props to SALT for their Texas vodka options. Ixnay the Tito’s and please prep my Salty Dog with some tasty Dripping Springs Vodka.
Gaby: You also can’t go wrong with a Texas Buck, but the Texas heat lured me towards the refreshing taste of Lavender.
Trisha: That heat certainly is persuasive. Lured me toward ordering another “refreshing”, palate pleasing Salty Dog. Ha!
After successfully teasing our taste buds, we moved on to the final course. Well, more like courses, but we shared. Anything to help minimize the guilt without sacrificing the taste testing pleasure. We both agreed on some beef and chicken with flavorful carb-filled sides, mixed in with some healthy veggies.
Our mouthwatering, Certified Piedmontese Ribeye was served with perfect-sized portions of Vegetable Hash and Cucumber and Tomato Salad. The Fried Chicken was a boneless, half chicken from Red Birds Farms accompanied by jalapeño-infused mashed potatoes, blended with the perfect amount of jalapeño salt. AND, being the cheese lovers that we are, we just couldn’t go without ordering the scrumptious Mac & Cheese (Housemade Ziti, Bacon, American, Aged Cheddar, Smoked Gouda). Delish!
Trisha: Talk about finger-licking good!
Gaby: Yeah! NO dessert for these two ladies. Well, at least until next time.
