MERCEDES – 157 rising eighth-graders and 129 rising eleventh-graders from South Texas Independent School District (STISD) will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and plan for their higher education this summer through the district’s third annual Summer Leadership & Virtual College Symposium.
The high school session will be held June 19-21 at STISD’s South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High) and Biblioteca Las Americas in Mercedes. The middle school session will be held June 26-28 at STISD’s South Texas Preparatory Academy (STPA) campus in Edinburg.
Throughout the sessions, students will spend their days participating in the following activities: virtual college tours, college exploration, a leadership-building seminar, financial aid session, college life session, resume writing, You Science/career searching, life skills, and college essay writing. There will also be an alumni panel discussion on the final day of the high school session to allow for students to ask those who were once in their shoes about their experience in college and career.
Motivational speaker Ronny Cabrera will make a return appearance this year to recount for the students his inspirational journey to get to where he is today. Cabrera is a dynamic and energetic former English-ESL teacher and coach, and an active principal and motivational speaker.
The Summer Leadership & Virtual College Symposium was initiated several years ago by the district to amplify its college-going culture and strengthen efforts and opportunities for students to get college-ready earlier on in their education.
The STISD Education Foundation assists in the funding of these opportunities for the students of STISD.
STISD is an open-enrollment magnet school district with a focus on college and career preparation for all students. STISD serves students from Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy Counties. For additional information, call (956) 565-2454 or visit www.stisd.net.
