PHARR – A group of athletes in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA) Swim team were recently named National Champs after earning 13 gold medals at the 2017 State Games of America competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan held Aug. 3-6. 

The State Games of America is a biennial Olympic-style event featuring competition between State Games medal winners in over 48 sports from across the country. Athletes who received gold, silver or bronze medals at the 2015, 2016 or prior to July 1, 2017 at their State Games are eligible to compete.   

The team members include: Ervey Sanchez from PSJA Early College High School, Joshua Velasquez from PSJA Southwest Early College High School and Juan Mejia and Joseph Velasquez from PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School. In addition to earning 13 gold medals, the team earned one silver and three bronze medals.
