How does that saying go, “If you’re eating well, you’re eating Italian”? For us, no truer words were ever spoken. Few can resist the temptation of ripe tomatoes, a multitude of meats, flavorful pasta and endless cheese! We were definitely not among those “few” last weekend.

After a busy Saturday morning, we decided we were in need of a hearty, carb-filled meal and perhaps, at least for one us, a li’l hair of the dog.

 

Gaby: Hey, you want to try that new, small Italian place here in McAllen? I think they have a BYOB option. We can swing by Feldman’s first.

Trisha: BYOB? Yes! Is that place even open right now, though?

Gaby: (post Google search) Nope! Dang it.

Trisha: Isn’t there some new Italian restaurant that opened up in San Juan or Pharr?

Gaby: Oh, yeah, it sounds like a character in the Game of Thrones. Khaleesi?!?!

Trisha: (laughing) You mean Scalisi’s, dear? Sure you’re up for it today? Seems like someone had some fun last night. (wink)

Gaby: Noone or nothing comes in the way of me and my Italian food!

Trisha: Ok, calmese. I see it’s gonna be one of those kind of outings. (LOL) Here we go!

 

On Nolana Loop, directly across the street from the Plaza Sports Center in Pharr, Texas, tucked away in a shopping plaza, is where we found Scalisi’s Chicago Style Pizza & More.

Although Scalisi’s, owned by Patty and Chuck Scalisi, has only been open for the past five months, the Scalisi family restaurants, including Mama Mia Pizzeria and Mama’s Pizzeria, have long been a staple in the Upper Valley area. We figured we were in for a treat.

From our extremely knowledgeable and congenial server, to the appealing menu options like Chicago style hot dogs, traditional pastas and pizzas, calzones, mushroom burgers and the comfortable atmosphere, we were instantly pleased with our decision to dine at Scalisi’s.

 

Gaby: Personal deep dish pizza? I am sold!

Trisha: Split one and explore a couple more menu items?

Gaby: Me and you (gesturing the universal eye to eye sign)... we got this!

 

Our afternoon feast consisted of a fresh Caprese salad, the highly approved of personal-sized, deep dish pepperoni pizza and some beef ravioli covered in grated parmesan. Unfortunately, there was NO room for dessert after that over indulgence of satisfying food.

We were so eager to try the different dishes, that we ALMOST forgot to check out the adult beverage options. Don’t fret, we had a couple of cold ones to quench our thirst. Turns out, for now, Scalisi’s is keeping it light in the grown-up juice department and simply offering a limited selection of cold beers, red wine Sangria, or a sweet Red Moscato, but they do expect to up their game in the near future.

INSIDER’S TIP: Scalisi’s is able to accommodate the BYOB option for a minimal uncorking fee. However, they’re still trying to work out the full details.
