When high school students in the state of Texas are looking for a good book, a resource used by school libraries is the Tayshas Reading List compiled by the Texas Library Association (TLA). A librarian at Mission High School (MHS) will be helping select the Young Adult novels that will be highlighted on the Tayshas Reading List for 2019. What that means is, Margie Longoria has a whole bunch of reading to do in the coming months as a member of the incoming TLA Tayshas Committee.
As a member of the committee she will be reading between 150 and 200 Young Adult novels. The ten member committee is charged with narrowing that down to what they consider the best of the best for the year. Her term will begin in April.
The Tayshas Reading list is used by high school libraries and community libraries throughout the state of Texas as a guide for purchasing books for the following year. The reading list is usually released annually in December.
The TLA says the object of the project is to motivate young adults to become lifelong readers and to participate in the community of readers.
Longoria admits the number of books she will have to read and judge is a little daunting on top of her other duties, but that she is looking forward to being a part of making a contribution to a statewide reading initiative. Longoria will serve a two year term on the Tayshas Committee.
