ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD: Wealthy businesspeople get that way by negotiation that’s aimed at their adversary’s lack of leverage and weaknesses. According to David Scarpa’s workmanlike screenplay, it’s how oil billionaire J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer) went about handling the abduction of his eldest grandchild (Charlie Plummer) with both the kidnappers and the victim’s distraught mother (Michelle Williams). Portraying the miserly tycoon as one who’s gained the world only to lose his soul in the process, Plummer (THE INSIDER) gives a layered performance that allows moments of emotion to leak out of his character’s cold-blooded exterior even though there’s not enough make-up in Hollywood to make him look twenty-five years younger during a Saudi Arabian flashback sequence. Williams (MANCHESTER BY THE SEA) adds substance to the stock single-minded, determined mother type that we’ve seen in similar films and the younger Plummer (No relation to Christopher) has some memorable moments including a cringe-inducing scene where he’s mutilated by his captors. Multiple genres inhabit the movie which has a couple of suspenseful moments although it’s not a thriller nor is it entirely a family drama even if the dynamics of the relationships make their occasional presence felt. While it makes for a watchable movie that tells an interesting story, it also results in a work that feels somewhat more detached from the subject matter than it should be. It results in the kind of film that’s good but could have easily been great. What we do have, though, is an entertaining drama well-directed by veteran Ridley Scott (ALIEN, GLADIATOR) with adherence to actual facts plus a strong ensemble cast in what amounts to a cinematic morality play. CRITIC’S GRADE: B
