On Monday, April 12, at noon, the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library and the Friends of the Edinburg Public Library will honor the Roberts Family of Edinburg for their generosity and their commitment to literacy and the arts with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the “Roberts Family Exhibit Hall.” The public is cordially invited to attend.

Library Director Letty Leija says that, “Due to the efforts and generosity of the Roberts Family, the Library and the Museum of South Texas History have evolved and continue to grow.” Leija further states that, “We owe a great debt of appreciation to the Roberts Family and this event is but a small token of our gratitude.”

Harry L. Roberts and L.J “Bob” Roberts were not only longtime owners of Roberts Chevrolet, they were also strong community leaders and respected citizens of Edinburg. Through their involvement in the community, they were instrumental in leading the way through the service organizations they served on. Theirs is a legacy of community pride and support that has been passed down to their children and grand children.

“Bob” Roberts was a member of the Kiwanis for over 60 years, though this service organization he was able to make a difference in the community through the Club’s many donations to very worthwhile causes, one of them being the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library.

Harry Roberts and his wife, Marjorie Roberts were long time members of the Friends of the Library. Mrs. Roberts served in various officer positions of the Library Board since the early 1980s while Harry Roberts was treasurer for over 20 years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were also members of the Hospital Auxiliary at the Edinburg Hospital. Harry Roberts was also Chairman of the ECISD Board of Trustees and President of the Rotary Club. He served on the board of both organizations for many years.

Both Harry Roberts and “Bob” Roberts served as chairman of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce during their respective terms then “Bob Roberts’ son, Mitch, continued the tradition of community service by not only serving as Chairman of the Board of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce but he also served in the same capacity on the board of the Museum of South Texas History.

As the next generation carries on the Roberts Family tradition of community support and generosity, on behalf of the Roberts Family, Mitch Roberts has given the Library a $30,000 donation. This money will be used to purchase a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan for the Library to use in its community outreach programs such as servicing home bound residents, visiting schools, and making the library accessible to the colonias. The Marjorie T. Roberts Family Trust and Harry L. Roberts Living Trust along with Mark Roberts and the Roberts Family have also pledged another $30,000. This donation will be utilized for collection expansion and additional programming in efforts to continue empowering our community.
