Whether you have decided on a college, are just considering your options, or are thinking of returning to college after being away for a while, financial aid opportunities are available for you. On Sunday, Feb. 21, South Texas College will be one of many schools nationwide that will host College Goal Sunday as part of a national initiative to bring together students and the professionals with the tools necessary to apply for much-needed money for college.
“We will have financial aid experts on hand to help students complete their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) applications, and give information on the different programs available including grants, loans and scholarships,” said Mike Carranza, associate dean for financial services at STC.
South Texas College’s Pecan Campus (Building H) in McAllen will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21. Private counseling areas and computers will be available for applicant use. Presentations will be available in both English and Spanish. There will be children’s arts and crafts available to provide parents a chance to get support while their children are engaged. There will also be free refreshments.
“So many people still think that college is not an option because of the cost and that is really a myth,” added Carranza. “More than 80 percent of STC’s students are on some form of financial aid, but you will never know if you qualify if you don’t apply. Aid isn’t just awarded based on financial need, there are some merit and academic based aids that are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Avoid delays and long lines. Whether you are going to choose STC or are just curious about financial aid options available to college students, come in and get this taken care of today.”
It is recommended that interested applicants bring in a 2009 income tax return (parent or spouse returns will be required), social security card, a state issued ID, driver’s license or resident alien card and proof of other income benefits (TANF, SSI, etc.).
