Congratulations to Leighann & Robert Gutierrez of Edinburg on the birth of their daughter, Avery Nikole, born August 7, 2009. This little cutie pie was welcomed into her family by McAllen grandparents Barbara & Dr. Pat Riley, and great-grandparents Kay & Judge Robert Barnes, who now live in San Antonio . . .

Barbara Riley brought her daughter and granddaughter to a recent ladies’ gathering, which was waaay better than seeing baby pictures. We could hold and coo at the real adorable baby and we women really think that’s fun!

Kudos to Jane Kittleman and her committee (names will be available later) for making the best lunch ever, to Kelly Dizdar for sharing her lovely home, and to Jean Semler for becoming our new president, including (but not limited to) lots of reminder phone calls, some just in the nick of time!

Also saw Joann Ryerson, Colleen Hook, Nancy Hawkins, Ann Greenfield, Carol Dearth, Margaret Baltis, Betty Bloomfield, Marilyn Moffitt, Bonnie Smith, Peggy Nix, Kathy Haynes, and her mom Mary Pierce while we were enjoying ourselves . . .

Saw nice, helpful librarian Martha Montelongo at the McAllen Public Library’s main branch, and a thank you to her for suggesting that I also check out the video on the life of Julia Child to go along with the biography I was checking out . . .

Saw Marilyn Hawkins and Esther Jenkins (aka MOB, as in Mother of the Bride) when we were out celebrating our recent birthdays . . .

Other ladies recounting good birthday times past were Linda Miller, and Sandra Bleakney and Debbie Morrow, who were back here from Ruidoso, NM . . .

Also had a fun visit with Sally & Jan Klinck, who had seen some mutual high school friends over the summer . . .

All of you IMAS members, or those of you who want to join the museum, don’t forgot tomorrow night’s reception, 6 - 8 p.m., A Celebration of Life of the artist Carl Mohner, featuring a beautiful exhibit of his works . . .

Also tomorrow night, the Junior League of McAllen is welcoming their fall provisional class, plus their brand-new members, at Cimarron Country Club. President Kristy Ochoa, and President-elect Denise Garcia would be happy to have all sustaining members drop by for the reception at 6, even if you don’t plan to stay for dinner.

In Edinburg news, Ramiro Garza, head of the Edinburg Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee, is organizing a Public Affairs luncheon featuring Edinburg’s school Superintendent Dr. Rene Gutierrez. This informative luncheon will be on Thursday, September 24th, 11:30 - 1 p.m. Call 383-4974 for reservations and info . . .

Listen up, symphony lovers! Next week, on Tuesday evening, September 22nd, David & Edna Guerra and Bill & Susie Robertson are hosting the Second Annual Benefit Evening for the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, with Maestro Dabrowski on piano. This is a very special event (we attended last year and savored the time), limited to 250 guests, so call the symphony office for reservations (@ $100) at 661-1615 . . .

Happy birthday for yesterday to the very same Bill Robertson; and for today to Ann Chambers . . .

Cutting that birthday cake tomorrow will be Rick Hawkins, Mary Bertha Martinez, Jan George, Becky Mueller, Nevin Franks, and Anna Leake . . .

A happy birthday wish for the previously mentioned generous Kelly Dizdar is going out for next Saturday, September 19th . . .
