Congrats to these ladies who were honored for their many years of service with the Zonta Club of West Hidalgo County: Ann McNallen-Makowski, Macaria Gorena, Jeanette Hawkins, and Dina Trevino . . .
Heard that Zonta member Deitrah Davis is already for Christmas, and their “hole-in-one-hitting” President Marianne Seal probably is, too . .
Speaking of holes-in-one, the Palmer Drug Abuse Program’s annual Drive For Recovery golf tournament, to be held this coming Sunday, December 6th, will offer a $million$ dollar prize in the hole-in-one shoot-out, plus a chance to win a car thanks to Bert Ogden Cadillac. Call PDAP at 687-7714 to register as a sponsor or a player. And good luck!
The holidays are kicking off big time with many, many events this first weekend in December. For instance, the McAllen Candlelight Posada will be this Friday and Saturday, December 4th and 5th, with the Cruz Family Choir once again leading the singing. And yes, Brenda Lee Huerta and Univision are making the pageant extra special this year. McAllen Chamber’s Jim Deuser can give you more information at firstname.lastname@example.org, or 682-2871 . . .
Adding to the holiday music this weekend, the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale will have their annual Christmas concert on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Convention Center. For tickets, check with the convention center box office or valleyorchestra.org, or call 661-1615 . . .
Saw many new acquaintances while attending the Valley Symphony’s November concert at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Had fun visiting with Susan Holmes, Janet & Kevin Hoban, Lynn Mauer, Kevin Nichols, Larry Homan, who is with the City of SPI, and Lisa & Javier Garza, the island’s interim police chief . . .
More info about the Junior League of McAllen’s Dias Festivos Marketplace this weekend — plan to attend DFM’s premier event at 10 a.m. on Friday, featuring Teri Sawyer, author of Delicious by Design. Then you can enjoy exclusive shopping til the doors open at noon. Check out the weekend events at www.juniorleaguemcallen.org, or call 682-0071 to reserve your tickets . . .
Use that same Junior League info to buy your tickets (if any are left!) for the fabulous Friday night gala, “A Global Affair” at the home of Ramon Garcia. These Junior League ladies will be honored for their lifetime of achievement: Marilyn Moffitt, Ann Moore, and Tina Martin. Don’t forget — this Friday, December 4th, and DFM’s whole weekend of “Christmas Around the World” will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Happy shopping!
Also very important — note that JLM has $10 tickets available for it’s “Cruise for a Cause” fundraiser, with the winner receiving a four-day cruise for two adults in either the Bahamas or Mexico, courtesy of Meisy Zamora of Worldventures. The drawing will be held on December 6th at DFM. Remember that JL website I mentioned?
Topping off the weekend fun, be sure to attend the International Museum of Art & Science’s Christmas Tree Forest awards ceremony at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 6th. Executive Director Serena Rosencrantz reminded everyone that first Sundays are free admission, thanks to the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation. The museum will be open from 1 - 5 p.m.
Don’t know the results as of this writing, but I sure hope a Valley girl won the Miss Texas Teen USA Pageant, held last weekend in Houston. Whatever the results, these young ladies surely represented us well: Allison Garza of McAllen, Laura Gonzalez of Edinburg, McKenzie Stanton of South Padre Island, Ricka Tijerina of Palmhurst, Megan Sharp of McAllen, Alexandra Pena of Sharyland, Olivia Garcia of Mission, and Alexandra Salinas of McAllen. (So, would someone let me know who won?)
Saw photographer Jenny Hollis, looking very photo-worthy herself, at a recent event. Have you seen her work? (Gorgeous!)
Happy December birthdays for yesterday, the 1st, go out to Tricia Drefke, Cheri Whitlock, Linda Moncada, Tula Sanchez, and Robert Martin . . .
For tomorrow, December 3rd, birthday greetings go to Bonnie Smith and Michelle Gutierrez . . .
Here’s hoping all of my readers had a Happy Thanksgiving last week, and none of you suffered indigestion. Why would any of us, after all?
