The Region One Education Service Center has announced the selection of the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees as the Regional School Board of the Year.

As a regional winner, Region One ESC will submit Los Fresnos CISD’s nomination in this year’s Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) School Board Awards Program, which recognizes school boards across the state that have demonstrated outstanding dedication and rendered ethical service to the children of Texas.

Members of the 2009-2010 Los Fresnos CISD Board are Rey Farias, President; Sandra Garcia, Vice-President; Darlene Pederson, Secretary; Ruben Treviño, Assistant Secretary; Jesus Amaya, Member; Leonel Garza, Member, and Martin Castillo, Member.  The Los Fresnos CISD Superintendent is Mr. Gonzalo Salazar.

Nominations were submitted to the Region One Education Service Center and were reviewed by a committee of Region One School superintendents.

 

The criteria used to evaluate nominated school boards included the board’s adherence to adopted board policies, their role as a policy-making body, demonstrated support for educational performance of state-established standards and educational improvement projects, a commitment to a code of ethics, community awareness, maintenance of a harmonious and supportive relationships among board members, provision of financial support for the school system, professional development, and the placement of the welfare of children served by the school system above personal or political motives.

“The Los Fresnos CISD Board of Trustees has demonstrated through its actions and leadership how a school board should effectively function within a school district. We congratulate the Board on this outstanding award and are proud to have it represent the Region One area,” said Jack Damron, Region One ESC Executive Director.

Five school boards from the state’s twenty service centers will be selected and recognized as “Honor Boards” by the Texas Association of School Administrators. The five boards will then be interviewed and the announcement of the Outstanding School Board of the Year will be made at the joint conference of the Texas Association of School Administrators and Texas Association of School Boards held in September in Houston, Texas.
