The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to offer the 2nd Annual Fishin’ Buddies Fishing Derby to be held at the Cascade Swimming Pool (2 Mile South 10th Street) on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The Fishin’ Buddies Fishing Derby is designed to teach young people the value of the great outdoors while providing a hands-on fishing experience. Children between the age of five and twelve are eligible to participate. CCA Texas will make a presentation just prior to the start of the derby that teaches children the value of fishing and conservation.

The Parks & Recreation Department will stock McAllen’s only well water pool, Cascade Swimming Pool, with approximately 300 pounds of live catfish. A limited number of fishing poles will be available to those who do not have fishing tackle on a first come, first serve basis. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles.

This event will feature two age groups: boys and girls ages 5-8 and 9-12. Trophies will be awarded to winners in each age category. Winners will be determined by the number and/or size of fish caught over an allotted time.

The cost to participate in this event is $2 per entry. The 2009 Fishin’ Buddies Fishing Derby is proudly supported by CCA Texas, Frost Bank & Andy’s Marine Inc. of McAllen.

Registration is available at any of the City’s three community centers (Lark, Las Palmas and Palm View) or on-line at www.mcallen.net/parks. For more information please call the McAllen Parks and Recreation Department at 681-3333.
