PHARR - Valente Olivarez Jr. was selected as the new Pharr area engineer of the Texas Department of Transportation effective April 1. As area engineer, Olivarez is responsible for managing construction and maintenance operations in Hidalgo County.

Olivarez started his career with TxDOT at the Pharr Area Office in June 1999 after graduating from Texas A&M University in Kingsville with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in May 1999. While in college, Olivarez also interned at the Pharr Area office for two summers working in both construction and design sections. He has been a licensed professional engineer since 2004.

"Olivarez has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout his professional development. As a young engineer, he has always taken on challenging projects with enthusiasm and a 'can do' attitude," said Mario R. Jorge, P.E., District Engineer for the TxDOT Pharr District. "The citizens of Texas will be well served for years to come with him as Pharr Area Engineer."

Since 2006, Olivarez has served as the construction engineer at the Pharr Area Office and prior to this position, worked in project design, construction inspection and project management at the Pharr Area Office. He served as the project engineer for the $75 million US 83 Expressway Expansion project in Mercedes from 2004 to 2009.

Olivarez is originally from Mission and currently resides in McAllen with his wife, Kimberly, and their son, Nathan Ezra ,and are expecting their second child this July.
