The Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV is committed to improving the health and wellness of all its Boys & Girls Club members.

The Club welcomed Jo Ann Bannworth, PR coordinator-educator, from the RGV Diabetes Association, to our Club 2020 El Tule Unit in celebration of the American Diabetes Alert Day with our Club members as a part of the Triple Play Games room Festival.

Over 80 Club members, both youth and teens, were treated to a presentation by Bannworth that focused on diabetes prevention and shed light on the Diabetes Alert Day. Bannworth is also scheduled to make a presentation to the parents of our Club members. These presentations are an effort of the Boys & Girls Club of Edinburg RGV to inform the Edinburg families about the seriousness of diabetes and to encourage them to take the Diabetes Risk Test and find out if they, or their loved ones, are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The main messages the RGV Diabetes Association wanted the Club members to walk away with were: how to control blood sugar, how to make healthy and nutritious food choices, how to maintain a healthy weight, and how to stay active and physically fit.

All components of Triple Play were implemented during the festival.

The “Soul” component was accomplished through strengthening interpersonal skills, positive behavior and good character through indoor social recreation activities and contests in pool, foosball, air hockey, and various board games.

The “Body” Component was accomplished through boosting Club members’ physical activities to a higher level by providing physical contests and fitness activities for all youth and teens with fitness and sports challenges.

Club members were also treated to healthy snacks addressing the mind “Mind” component of Triple Play, which emphasizes eating smart and maintaining physical fitness to improve the overall well-being of Club members, along with a verbal presentation on what diabetes is and how to prevent getting it.

The Festival was made possible through a generous grant from the Rita Allen Foundation.
