AUSTIN — To help cities, counties, school districts and other local taxing units successfully navigate the process of setting 2009 property tax rates, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs' Property Tax Assistance Division is hosting a statewide series of truth-in-taxation seminars this summer.
An Edinburg regional seminar is scheduled for Monday, July 27, at the Region I Education Service Center, located at 1900 W. Schunior Street.
"Our seminars offer step-by-step guidance on how to calculate the effective and rollback tax rates, what to publish and when to hold a tax rollback election," Combs said. "Our property tax experts will also discuss how recent changes in the law affect the process of adopting property tax rates for 2009."
The truth-in-taxation seminar will consist of two separate presentations. The morning session, from 9 a.m. - noon, will focus exclusively on setting tax rates for taxing units other than school districts. The afternoon session, from 1 - 4 p.m., will cover the process of setting school tax rates.
The seminar is free, but pre-registration is required to guarantee receiving a copy of the Comptroller's Truth-in-Taxation publication and the presentation slides. Use the registration form at www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/proptax/tnt09registration.pdf.
