The Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV is proud to announce that two club members, Sara Salinas (10) and Amaya Hernandez (8) have advanced to the AAU Area3 Junior Olympic National Qualifiers Track and Field Meet for race walking to be held in Norfolk Va on July 30, 2010.
Amaya and Sara beat out their competition at the San Antonio Regional Meet. Both club members and 12 others have been practicing 2 hours daily since June 7 under the leadership of Coach AC Jaime and the South Texas Walking Club.
“We are very proud of Sara, Amaya and all the kids who have shown their talents with the walking club”, stated Sabrina Walker-Hernandez, Chief Professional Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV. “Perhaps we may have an Olympic gold medalist in our future.”
The Boys & Girls Club has played an integral role in the Edinburg community for 39 years, providing daily programs and services to over 16,000 young people.
The South Texas Walking club was formed in 1995 The club has had 34 and 13 nine- to 18- year-old Junior Olympic AAU and USA Track & Field gold medal winners respectively in the last six years. That represents 40 percent and 22 percent of all National gold medal winners in this period. Four club members have set six National Junior Olympic records and six members have become high school All-Americans.
Dr. Tom Eastler of the University of Maine at Farmington referred to the South Texas Walking Club as being the top powerhouse of racewalking in the Nation. Many of the graduate members have earned racewalking scholarships including fifteen and thirteen time High School All-Americans Roberto and Ricardo Vergara who are presently attending Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky under a full four year scholarship and are planning to try out for the 2012 Olympics in London.
