PENITAS - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the McAllen Station seized more than 3,300 pounds of marijuana early this morning.

The seizure occurred when agents saw a suspicious vehicle traveling north away from the Rio Grande. As agents approached the vehicle, the driver made an abrupt U-turn and headed back south, where he abandoned it at the river's edge. Agents also found two other vehicles abandoned in the same area. Additionally, the agents saw two rafts loaded with marijuana and about 30 people returning to Mexico.

Inside the vehicles agents found a total of 140 bundles of marijuana, with an estimated value of more than $2.6 million. Agents discovered that one of the vehicles had been reported stolen out of Weslaco and turned it over to the Penitas Police Department.

The marijuana was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
