The Museum of South Texas History (“MOSTHistory”), a museum chronicling the heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico, invites you to celebrate Mother’s Day with a musical performance of Mexican music performed by accomplished harpist, Sylvia Clark, and accompanied with light refreshments. Afterward, audience members can explore the museum’s exhibits and browse the museum store for a souvenir to remember this unique Mother’s Day.

Well-known to Rio Grande Valley (RGV) residents as the “Wedding Harpist,” Clark is a member of the South Texas Lyric Opera, an organization that produces opera, oratorios, musicals and concert performances and the McAllen Symphonic Band, an organization that provides cultural entertainment and is an outlet for RGV musicians. Clark is in-demand to perform at weddings, quinceañeras, parties and other special events. Clark’s repertoire includes a variety of Mexican songs, providing the perfect soundtrack for celebrating Mother’s Day in South Texas. Typically playing the harp by memory, one would never guess that Clark did not start her music career as a child.

Attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a harp case caught Clark’s attention while walking through the music building. Today, Clark carries a white harp case that holds a 65-pound pedal harp, Hyacynth, named after a line in a poem but spelled differently due to an accidental “y”. Similar to the piano, both the melody and the accompaniment can be played at the same time. Unlike the piano, Clark’s harp is a multi-stringed instrument with seven foot pedals.

While audience members listen to the luminescent sounds of Clark’s harp playing in the Grand Lobby, they will also be able to enjoy a light refreshment of traditional Mexican Pan de Polvo and lemonade and coffee. After the mini concert, audience members can explore the museum, including permanent exhibitions Rio Grande Legacy and River Crossroads and shop the museum store for a one-of-a-kind Mother’s Day gift or memento. This Sunday Speaker Series musical performance by Clark is included in the fee for regular museum admission. Audience members may purchase a FRIENDship as a Mother’s Day gift to take immediate advantage of just one of several benefits by attending this Sunday Speaker Series performance for free.
