Former Edinburg Mayor Al Ramirez passed away Wednesday afternoon, according to Rep. Aaron Pena who announced the news on his blog. Ramirez, 86, was former mayor who welcomed the Striking Rio Grande Farm workers from a hospital bed on their 1966 march to Austin. Ramirez was a life long educator who helped develop bilingual curricula in the 1970s. He also published history and genealogy books and had a great sense of humor, according to former Rep. Alex Moreno.

The public is invited to Memorial Funeral Home on Canton Road beginning at 5 p.m. on Sunday where the family will hold a rosary and memorial service beginning at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Burial will be at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Inspiration Road in Mission.
