The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce is joining Cool Cities, the Edinburg CVB, UTPA Wellness Center, the City of Edinburg and the Edinburg Environment Advisory Board to bring the 2nd Annual “Edinburg Healthy Living Festival” on Saturday, March 6th, 2010 from 8am-2pm at the Edinburg City Hall Plaza, 415 W. University Drive.

The Festival is created to celebrate healthy living and quality of life in the City of Edinburg. The festival will offer citizens and visitors an opportunity to learn more about healthy and sustainable living and services and activities in the community that support both. The festival is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to create a more livable and sustainable community and to achieve the goals of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, which include creating a compact, walkable urban community and promoting multiple transportation options such as bike lanes, sidewalks and hike and bike trails.

Some of the special events are as follows: Edinburg on Wheels Bike Ride, “Mutt Strutt” Dog Walk, Health Fair, UTPA Wellness Center 5k Run/Walk, and Healthy Living Presentations. The Festival will offer information on organic gardening, recycling, urban forestry, wildlife and environment, health and nutrition, exercise, library services, downtown revitalization and other community initiatives.

“The festival will include presentations on Edinburg’s exciting downtown revitalization project and the principles of New Urbanism and Smart Growth which are a being incorporated into that project and being considered for Edinburg’s future growth, planning and development. We invite the entire community to just come out to the festival and have wonderful time” said Mark Pena, chairman of the Edinburg Environment Advisory Board and CoolCities Coordinator.

Festival Participants will include both public and private organizations that support and promote healthy and sustainable living. The festival will include a main tabling event at the City Hall Plaza offering information on healthy living and sustainability.

Sales of food, services, or information not permitted at the festival.
