EDINBURG - More than $12.4 million worth of marijuana was seized by U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley Sector over the past five days.

Agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station seized the largest load Friday - bringing in more than 2,400 pounds of marijuana. The seizure was made when agents, along with Starr County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area investigators, executed a search warrant on a ranch north of Roma, Texas. While searching the ranch, agents located the marijuana hidden underground inside a manmade bunker.

The marijuana was over to HIDTA for further investigation.

Another significant seizure occurred Monday near Escobares, Texas, when agents spotted several people loading bundles of marijuana into a truck near the Rio Grande. When the agents identified themselves, the smugglers abandoned more than 800 pounds of marijuana and fled to Mexico.

Several additional seizures brought the total amount of marijuana seized from Thursday through Monday to more than 15,500 pounds.
