Saw lots of wine lovers at the first of the Spanish Thursday nights in September at Feldman’s Market Center. Met Aracela Mendoza, Dr. Miguel Castillo, Rosa & Carlos Toledo, Craig Fox, Nyssa Carlson, Pamela Renterria, and Melissa Diaz of First National Bank, and a good time was had by all . . .

Not only did we savor the wine and the wine expertise provided by Feldman’s Rick Ramos, we enjoyed a gourmet meal prepared by the excellent crew of Executive Chef Ruben Aleman, Moses Castro, Rafael Gonzalez, and Timoshi Kitamora. Check with the Market Center, 687-8497, to see if space is available for another Thursday night in September, or ask about their Tuesday night tastings . . .

Sat with these lovely ladies at the September Pan American Round Table meeting: Margarita Salinas, Christina Barrios, Frances Metcalf, Mary Bertha Martinez, Hortensia Pacheco, and Edie Virkus . . .

Just a few of the other gracious ladies spotted were Marcela Arrioja, Deanna Longoria Ramirez, Yolanda Chapa, Marcia Ingram, Becky Strong, and our newest member, Irma Zavaleta. This really nice group is looking forward to our 75th Jubilee next month, so Pan Americanism has been here for a long time in McAllen!

Saw cutie pie Catherine Chaffee, Betty Bloomfield’s neighbor, who zipped in to say “hi” to the card players . . .

Saw that the St. John’s Episcopal School board for this year has already been very busy, especially Administrator Jovita Myatt. Thank you to the board for keeping those memories alive for many of us former parents and students: President Dori Garza, Vice President CC Wilkins, Secretary Mildred Sanborn, and Treasurer Kevin Collier . . .

Way to go Hannah Welch! She is coordinating a team of walkers to honor Jane Cozad’s memory on October 3, in Bryan/College Station, in a walk to defeat ALS. To register or for more info, go to www.active.com/donate/bcs/2009, or add /teamjane to that, to donate . . .

President Joanne Perez, the board and volunteers of the McAllen Literacy Center would like to remind you that today is International Literacy Day. They are sponsoring a “Stay at Home” tea this week, so stay home, have a cup of tea, and read a book . . .

From the friendly folks at United Blood Services is a request for all of you who are eligible to donate blood. Fact: 175 pints are needed here 7 days a week all year. United Blood Services is the only blood provider in the Rio Grande Valley. Fact: less than 2% of eligible donors give even once a year here. I just donated, am feeling fine - and even lost a few ounces, a very good thing! Thank you to UBS employee Roman Salinas, who visited with me and made the whole process fairly painless . . .

Here’s a happy belated birthday wish to Shannon Honrubia for last week, September 1st. Happy birthday wishes for yesterday go to Lisa Cofoid, Monica Martinez, Fred Harms, and Jackie Pride . . .

For today, birthday cheer heads in the direction of Angie Gutierrez, Mark Browning, Coylie Koelle, Renee Hinojosa, Jackie Vinger (no telling what kind of great cake he’s getting!), and Anne Thaddeus . . .

Cutting their own birthday cakes tomorrow will be Matthew Garcia, Madelaine McLelland, Joshua Garza, Linda Herweck-Walters, Jay Humphreys, and Linda Moore . . .

A very special happy 94th birthday for this weekend, September 13th, is wished to Glenn Huffman, from your wife June, family and friends . . .
