INCEPTION:

Movies about dreams are tricky to navigate since you can never be totally certain that what youíre seeing is real or just a figment of someoneís non-waking, subconscious imagination. Itís a conundrum that exists throughout this highly original and inventive film about people who infiltrate dreams as a way of stealing corporate secrets. Even this unique premise is turned on its ear when the ďthievesĒ are hired by a rich, mysterious industrialist (Ken Watanabe) to actually introduce an idea into the mind of a business rival (Cillian Murphy) that will ultimately lead to the demise of the latterís energy-related empire. What follows are characteristics of a heist movie where you meet the groupís leader (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his associates with the sort of special talents suitable for wandering into a personís consciousness. Technically, this is a superb film with special praise reserved for Wally Pfisterís dreamscape cinematography, Hans Zimmerís appropriately dominating musical score and the very strategic editing of Lee Smith. The visual effects figure prominently in the film without being a distraction and include nifty sequences like a zero-gravity hotel hallway fight as well as Paris literally folding itself in half (reinforcing my perception of the French as a rather spineless lot). As confounding as INCEPTION is, itís more than involving enough to merit a second viewing if for no other reason than to appreciate the intricate construction of director/writer Christopher Nolanís (THE DARK KNIGHT) screenplay. Filmmaker Luis Bunuel (VIRIDIANA) once said that if given the choice he would spend two hours a day in activity with the remainder in dreams Ö provided he could remember them. He would have loved this mind-bending work where dream logic and reality are fused to create a very memorable film. CRITICíS GRADE: A-
