Brewster Elementary is getting new additions to its school. The building projects that are scheduled for Brewster campus include a school gymnasium addition, secondary classrooms and a cafeteria. Board members, Brewster educators and the community gathered at the groundbreaking that took place last week.

“This will greatly benefit our students,” said Cipriano Peña, Brewster principal.

Peña said there would be two major projects that will be completed — the cafeteria, which will have an auditorium, a stage and a music room. “The cafeteria will be utilized for meetings and presentations and will have the technology to provide an awesome atmosphere to our students, parents and staff,” he said.

The next building phase will be an addition to the gymnasium that will have hardwood floors, weight room facilities and dressing rooms. Peña said all construction will be completed in different phases — phase one will be the construction of the cafeteria, phase two will be gymnasium and an additional 14 classrooms, which will be used by middle school students attending Brewster.

“We will soon have a facility we can all be proud of, indeed a great accomplishment,” he said.

Currently the school has portable buildings that are used as classrooms, after the completion of the new classroom additions, Peña said they will get rid of them.

The cafeteria is estimated to be completed by the end of the year or early 2010 and will sit approximately 250 students. “Everything is set to be completed by the 2010/2011 school year,” he said.

The new additions are part of an approved $111,920,000 school bond issue to build new schools and make additions and renovations to existing schools in the district. This was approved on May 2008 by Edinburg voters.

Broaddus and Associates are the project managers, Negrete and Kolar are the project architects, contractors and Enriquez Enterprises is the project contractor for the Brewster school bond project.

Brewster Elementary is located one mile West on FM 186 west of U.S. Highway 281.
