HAVANA, Texas - Drug smugglers pelted Border Patrol agents with rocks during a failed narcotics smuggling attempt late Wednesday evening.
The assault occurred when agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station spotted several boats returning to Mexico laden with bundles. Agents from the McAllen Boat Patrol unit were called in to assist in thwarting the smuggling attempt. While agents attempted to seize the narcotics, several people on the Mexican riverbank began pelting the agents with rocks, striking one agent in the back of the head. In an effort to fend off their attackers, agents responded by firing their weapons.
"Assaults on our agents will not be tolerated," Chief Patrol Agent Rosendo Hinojosa said. "Our agents are well-trained and equipped to deal with these types of volatile situations and they will respond with appropriate force against all threats to ensure their safety and the safety of the communities they protect."
The incident remains under investigation.
