Wedding best wishes go to Faith Patton & Joseph McIntosh, who married last Saturday, August 1, 2009 . . .

Baby congratulations go out to Amanda Lee & Adan Serna of Edinburg, who welcomed little Adan Serna, Jr., into their family almost a year ago on August 7, 2008. Happy upcoming first birthday to Adan Jr., and congratulations to his proud grand-parents Ester & Ernie Lozano of Mission, and Gloria & Rogelio Serna of Edinburg . . .

Saw Larry Garzonie and Jerry Leadbetter just where I wanted to see them! Busily working with sliding glass doors and so forth . . .

Had a quick visit with Kristine Dacallos, who arrived bearing magazines and ended up admiring leather jackets . . .

Saw winner Betty Bloomfield, runner-up Shirley Slusher, and Mel Johnstone (winner of the deucey prize) when we were all playing party bridge. Oh, did I mention us also-rans such as Geen Wilkins, Susan Galik, Betty Gegenheimer, and Keesha Zey?

Yea — we won the tree wars, along with our neighbor Marianna Wright — and we can thank reputable nurserymen such as Jon Klement at Southern Landscapes and Waugh’s. We learned that you don’t just hack trees off halfway up — they need to be professionally trimmed . . .

Saw Linda Downing¸who was down for the whole month of July staying in Laguna Vista, and visiting up and down the Valley with her daughter Leslie Hardison and other family and friends such as Hazel Burrows . . .

Heard all about cooking madeleines from Scott Beard. They must be quite the cooks — he and esposa Denise Sansing served shortbread cookies made with goat butter — all the better to nibble on with fresh figs and honeycomb. FYI — goat butter is to be found at the Shary HEB, and according to cooking lore by Scott, honey is the only food in the world which never spoils . . .

Erren Seale didn’t clear up for me whether or not one actually nibbles on honeycomb, or merely enjoys its appearance . . .

Saw Becky Gerling and Frances Metcalf while we discussed colors; and spotted Dee Treviño (Marianna’s mom) who took granddaughter Olivia out to lunch . . .

This coming Sunday, IMAS will sponsor a lecture at 3:30 p.m. by Paul Valadez, UTPA Art professor, who will discuss his experiences as an artist in the Rio Grande Valley. His exhibit “Fragments” is currently showing at the museum . . .

Happy birthday celebrants for today include Yolanda Chapa, bro-in-law Charles Zey, and Betty Klinck. Happy anniversary for today goes to Gayle & Neal Runnels . . .

More info will be forthcoming later in the month, but according to Rebakah Acker, you moms can remember that Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) will have registration on August 27th. Check them out at btmops@hotmail.com . . .

And finally, Rachel Torres reminds all of you new provisional members of the Junior League of McAllen that your first meeting is tomorrow night!
