New amenities will soon be available for families set to endure prolonged stays with loved ones at Edinburg Children’s Hospital.
An official Wall Breaking ceremony was held on Thursday, Jan. 8, at Edinburg Children’s Hospital to simulate the construction of the new Ronald McDonald Family Room currently in progress on the third floor.
Any family is eligible to utilize amenities in family rooms at little or no cost for the duration of a child’s stay at Edinburg Children’s Hospital. This includes facilities for sleep, a full kitchen and laundry facilities.
“It’s a way to serve families across the Valley in what is probably the most difficult time, with a child in the hospital,” said Sandra Flinn, Ronald McDonald Board director. “There were needs especially here in a children’s hospital for families that just need a break.
“When a family has a child in the hospital it crosses all socio-economic boundaries,” Flinn said. “Regardless of status, when you have an ill child everyone is in the same boat.”
Target date of completion is the first week of February. Plans call for four other family rooms to open across the Valley.
Valley Baptist Hospitals in Harlingen and Brownsville, Knapp Hospital in Weslaco, and McAllen Medical Center have planned all for new family rooms.
