The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Community Engagement is hosting El Día del Mundo, UTPA’s first-ever sustainability community outreach event, April 28 from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the UTPA Ballroom.
The event, sponsored by Shell Oil Company, is free and open to the public and will include breakfast and lunch.
At a time when new technologies are introduced around the globe and the demand for energy increases, it is more important than ever to become informed about what we as a society can do to protect our planet and its resources. El Día del Mundo is UTPA’s effort to lead the green movement in South Texas.
Participants will hear from Humberto Garza, who spearheaded the construction of the Hidalgo County Precinct 2 headquarters, the Rio Grande Valley’s first government building constructed with energy-efficient materials and powered by renewable energy sources.
There also will be a corporate panel discussion about innovative technological processes being implemented at the panelists' respective companies to make those businesses more environmentally friendly. The panelists are: Luis Pinto, social investment manager, strategic partnerships, Shell Oil Company; Sergio Contreras, regional manager—external affairs, AT&T; and Atanacio Hinojosa, business development, Magic Valley Electric Cooperative.
Environmental entrepreneur, author and media personality Josh Dorfman, also known as “The Lazy Environmentalist,” will be the keynote speaker and talk about green solutions that fit people’s lives, reduce their environmental impact, and accelerate the green economy.
Attendees will receive a T-shirt, bag, and a copy of Dorfman's book.
