Enjoyed meeting Jimmie Moyer and Tina Scoggins the other day — two lovely ladies who are sure to cross my path more in the future . . .

A group of us really enjoyed the delicious ladies’ luncheon prepared by chefs Darlene Hart, Pam Wingate, Geen Wilkins, and Barbara Parry. And at the same time we enjoyed the ambience of Gayle Runnels’ beautiful home . . .

Saw lots of local community leaders awarding scholarships to the McHi graduating class at their scholarship awards ceremony last week, such as Norma Lynda Zepeda with the Boys & Girls Club, Alicia & Noe Alvarado with the American Legion Auxiliary, Linda Requenez-Rossborough with the Junior League of McAllen, Ron Montemayor with the Palm City Lions Club, Fawn Foudray-Golich with the Rotary Club, and more . . .

Also saw Veronica Whitacre with the McHi PTSO, J. J. Avila, Sr. with the Basketball Boosters, Sam Lopez with BBVA Compass Bank, Maribel Martinez with Halff Associates, Terry Wilson with McAllen Kiwanis Club, Blanca Hinojosa with Security First Federal Credit Union, and Norfy Garza with South Texas Federal Credit Union . . .

Met Norma Saenz, teacher from Victor Fields Elementary, Rosario De Leon, and Maribel Martinez, who were at my table ahead of the ceremony. We were royally entertained by the McHi singers, who were soooo talented — move over American Idol and make way for these young people. Kudos to their choir director Mr. Reyes . . .

And these folks handed out many memorial scholarships: my former neighbor Joel Penk, and Gabrielle Cano, Gerardo Paz, Matthew Drefs, Cris Ausborn, Minne Gutierrez, and June Corso. Apologies if you were left out, but I commend all of the organizations who awarded scholarship to our local graduating seniors, and my own McAllen Pan American Round Table. These young people receiving scholarships are the hope of our future . . .

Speaking of the hope of the future, congratulations to Lauren Link, who is graduating from Texas State University in San Marcos with a double major in chemistry and math! She has already been accepting into a combined masters and PhD program at Texas A&M, and starts right away. Some of the folks proud of her locally are mom Catherine Link, and Ted & Isabel Link . . .

Here’s a fundraiser to attend for a very good cause: on Thursday, May 27th, the Third Annual Spring Fundraiser for the RGV Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic will be held at the home of Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia. You can help prevent so many unwanted dogs and cats roaming Hidalgo County, so call the clinic at 687-7728 for more info, or e-mail rgvclinic_manager@yahoo.com . . .

Please call me at the number at the end of this column if you would like to help support the Ruandan women’s charity Aspire, by purchasing some of the lovely necklaces ($25) and/or earrings ($15) made by these women who need to support their children . . .

Wedding best wishes for last Saturday, May 19th , go out to Allison Goldman & Brandon Horak . . .

For tomorrow, birthday good wishes go to Whitney Browning, William Moore, and Sarah Turley . . .
