Happy 4th of July, Independence Day, coming up next Sunday. Be safe and I hope you can enjoy fireworks from a distance wherever you are. If you are planning to view them from South Padre Island, save yourself some traffic irritation and just plan to leave the next morning . . .
Speaking of the island, saw recent mom-of-the-groom Maxine Guerra relaxing at the island, a well deserved rest after her family’s June wedding festivities. I was stocking up on toys for grandchildren at Tuesday Morning SPI . . .
Saw Foss Jones as we were heading out of McAllen on a jet plane, and talked children. Then we sat next to a nice man in the oil industry on our way to Houston. (No, not BP, just a local Texas/Valley man.)
Feeling chatty, I asked my next seatmate out of Houston his profession and was relieved to hear “pilot.” Drat it, though, he dashed my confidence by saying that he was a Marine helicopter pilot and could never land one of the things we were on. Oh well, at least I felt safer . . .
Thank you to almost professional dog sitter Nancy, soon to be mentioned in a bridge context, and soon to widen her scope to cat sitting! I’m just hoping our Chihuahua Mocha will agree to return home with us, after special homemade doggy meals . . .
Heard that the likes of Ann Moore, Jane Talbot, Frances Metcalf, and Jackie Jones had fun with the cool weather of Ruidoso, NM, and with playing bridge. Did you know that you can now fly to Roswell, NM, instead of El Paso, Texas, to find your closest point to Ruidoso?
On the other hand, no need to travel — Betty Bloomfield, Marilyn Moffitt, Judy Amyx, and Nancy Cosby (aka the petsitter) had fun playing bridge here in McAllen. So remember, if you like to play bridge, you can probably do so anywhere and make new friends. And according to moi and Fay Cook and the Friends of the Library, you can be happy anywhere if you like to read and have an interesting book in your mitts!
Judy Amyx and I have in common gratitude to Phyllis Hutchins for many errands and kindnesses, both in and out of town . . .
Bridge player and recent mother-of-the-bride Candie Wicker is holding on to our “two club trophy” with an I’m not giving it up! attitude . . .
Gratitude is also in order for neighbor Bob McClure for recommending the restaurant Alhambra to us. We checked it out with Gretchen & L. D. Clopton, and all enjoyed both the delicious menu and the perfect presentation. Our waiter could answer every single one of the many questions we had about the menu, but check it our for yourselves at S. 17th & Fresno . . .
If you are in the DC/McLean VA area, we can recommend The Capital Grille, major credit card or big bucks a necessity, but excellent cuisine and service. Waiter with a French accent at no edxtra charge . . .
Your columnist apologizes for forgetting to take my birthday list on last week’s trip. I sort-of-remember that there is a June 29th birthday group that celebrated yesterday, and hope they had fun. Cynthia Murray or Gary Gurwitz might know more . . .
And happy 4th of July anniversary coming up for Gay & Andy Hill, and former McAllenites Suzanne & Rob Alvarez. Fireworks forever!
