Congratulations to Caroline & Ray Moore, who just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Like the good people they are, they asked their friends and family to donate gifts of food or Christmas toys to the Salvation Army instead of giving them gifts. After 50 blissful years, the two of them sharing with a non-profit instead of accumulating more things gets my vote of approval!

Saw both Manager Joe Lasiter and Assistant Manager Kaylynn Norman while some of us enjoyed ourselves at luncheon and cards at McAllen Country Club. By the way, we are not just “ladies who lunch,” but all contributors to the local economy!

Also saw the club’s Membership/Marketing Director Sally Garza and Banquet Manager Samantha Barnett, all working to make our lives easier, and surely having a good time while they are doing this . . .

Finally, a movie I can recommend wholeheartedly — Julie & Julia! Even if you don’t enjoy cooking, you will probably enjoy this wonderful story of life. Meryl Streep and Amy Adams were both delightful, as were their film husbands. Though I haven’t been cooking as much as I used to (must elbow my spouse out of the way), I did whip up a crème brûlée the following day. Honesty prevails — he whipped me up some gourmet stuffed flounder, among other epicurean delights . . .

Heard from all my lady friends that they really enjoyed the movie, but Margaret Colley wins the prize for having seen it the most. I may go back myself and see it again. True confessions — I’ve just bought both Mastering the Art of French Cooking and Julie & Julia . . .

And speaking of great cooks, a huge thank you goes to Kathleen Vinger, who made an incredible flourless cake covered with (sandwiched in between?) both vanilla and chocolate whipped cream. I could add inches by merely thinking about it . . .

Birthday good wishes for yesterday go to Bailey Gurwitz, Gloria Lowe, Luis Lozano, Jim Wagner and Braxton Hornbuckle . . .

In a call-in, happy birthday for today is wished to Ninfa Estimbo of Edinburg. And I really appreciate all of you for calling in news. Thanks, Ida!

Also celebrating birthdays today are Dr. Hiram Tavarez, Phyllis Griggs, Bob Morehead, Patricia Reybal, and Joe Riley . . .

Cheerful birthday greetings for tomorrow are wished to Joseph Robert Velado, Lou Thompson, Karol Mace, Lan Jones, Stacie Gray, Maynard Kreidler, Kirby Cavin, and Charles Thompson, III . . .

A very happy 4th birthday wish goes out to Alayna Rivera of Donna for this Friday, August 28th. Another call in — so thanks again to all . . .

Special thanks are also in order for those who sent me birthday cards last week, such as Susan Galik, Tim Johnstone, Charlene Hertz (for Pan American Round Table), and Linda Requénez Rossborough (for Junior League). Mel Johnstone, however, wins the chuckle prize for the musical card carefully selected with the assistance of her granddaughter, Kirby Collier. Too funny!
