A new shopping center is coming to the city. Jackson Park Plaza, a professional retail center located in Edinburg’s progressive west side; on Jackson Road between University Drive and Sprague Street, where much of the city’s newest business developments are located.
Lord & Gonzalez L.P., a construction and development company located in Pharr broke ground last week on the three acre site. The 35,000 square feet of rental space is set to be completed by March 2009 and will have 22 retail spaces each varying in size between 1,600 square feet and 10,000 square feet.
Developer Frank Gonzalez said the $3.5 million project currently has tenants under contract that include National Lube Express, X-Trim Hair Salon and A La Casa Communications, several restaurants are also under consideration.
“The proposed shopping center is designed to meet Edinburg’s architectural requirements and will be complemented with beautiful landscaping,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said space for an anchor tenant is available with 10,000 square feet of space.
“We think this is probably the city, percentage wise, that is growing faster and we think this is the place to be,” Gonzalez said. Other developments from Lord & Gonzalez L.P. include locations in Harlingen and Weslaco.
Gonzalez said he, along with his two sons who are partners at Lord & Gonzalez L.P., decided to build in that specific location because Jackson Road is a major road, they believe will bring more traffic.
“We like Jackson Road because we think this is one of the major corridors. Traffic flow is constant and we wanted to be close to Hwy 107 and think this is an ideal place,” he said.
Executive Director of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, Ramiro Garza, Jr. said breaking ground on a new business shows investors have confidence in the city.
“It is a new development, a new investment and there’s going to be some news jobs here. This is great for the city, it shows the confidence investors have in the city,” Garza said.
