THE OTHER GUYS: I’m glad that analyzing whether or not a movie comedy succeeds is so much easier than having to make one. Simply put, if the material makes you laugh consistently for an hour-and-a-half or better, it did what it was supposed to do. The humor in this parody of buddy cop flicks takes a lot of different forms which include the bureaucratic, pencil-pushing title characters (Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg) themselves who are hardly regarded as policemen by any of their co-workers. Ferrell (See sidebar below.), though, relishes his mundane duties while partner Wahlberg (THE DEPARTED) wants to break away from his internal exile and the disdain of his peers brought about by an accidental shooting of New York Yankees star Derek Jeter (ÒYou should have shot A-Rod.Ó). As obvious and raucous as the humor often is, it’s also, at times, subtle to the point where a second viewing might be warranted in order to catch the very witty, ÒthrowawayÓ dialogue in Chris Henchy and director Adam McKay’s screenplay. The plot, such as it is, about a Wall Street investor (Steve Coogan) bilking a mega-corporation out of billions in bad investments seems almost irrelevant and doesn’t lead to anything except a final jab at government bailouts that feels out of place in a movie of this kind. But this isn’t a film-killing flaw since most of the humorous sequences are all run together for a sort of comic continuity that gives this work a cohesion it has to have. Part of the high degree of difficulty with movie comedy is that audience members bring their own type of humor with them to the theater. GUYS manages the arduous task of appealing to all kinds with its multiple styles of amusement. CRITIC’S GRADE: B
